“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.”
1 Timothy 2:1-2
President’s Day is more than a day off from school. It is a good time for homeschool families to talk about leadership, history, and God’s hand in our nation. As Christian parents, we can help our children see this holiday in a way that honors the Lord first.
We can begin by reminding our children that God is the One who allows leaders to serve. The Bible tells us to pray for those in authority (1 Timothy 2:1–2). Presidents are important, but they are not the highest authority. God is. This helps our children respect leaders without putting them above the Lord.
President’s Day is also a great time to learn about good character. We can read simple stories about George Washington’s honesty or Abraham Lincoln’s courage. We can talk about the good choices they made. Then we can ask our children: What kind of character does God want us to have? True greatness begins in the heart.
It is also helpful to explain that presidents are human. They make mistakes. They need wisdom. They need prayer. This teaches our children not to idolize leaders, but to trust in God instead. Psalm 146:3 says not to put our trust in princes. Our hope is not in a president. Our hope is in the Lord.
We can take time as a family to pray for the current president and other leaders. We can pray for wisdom, honesty, and courage to do what is right. Even if we do not always agree with leaders, we can still pray for them. This shows our children what it means to live as respectful Christian citizens.
Most of all, we can use President’s Day to point to Jesus. Every president serves for a short time. But Jesus is the King who rules forever. He is wise, just, and perfect. When we celebrate President’s Day, we can thank God for our country — and remember that Christ is the true and lasting King.
