About Our Organization

Since 1986, Family Protection Ministries (FPM) has worked to defend parents’ freedom to train, educate, and care for their children privately, without governmental interference. We monitor and analyze California legislation affecting private home education and work to protect parental authority and educational choice.

Our mission is rooted in the conviction that parents have a fundamental responsibility and right to direct their children’s education. Through legislative research, public policy education, and advocacy, FPM works to protect these freedoms for California families.

Internship Overview

We are seeking a curious, thoughtful college student to support podcast preparation, news research, and written content development.

This role offers hands-on experience researching current events, preparing podcast materials, drafting articles, and editing content that helps audiences understand legislative developments and issues affecting private home education. It is well suited to students interested in journalism, communications, public policy, or media.

FPM’s internship program involves more than learning practical job skills. Our approach combines three essential elements: Training, Education, and Implementation. Interns develop research, writing, and editorial skills while deepening their understanding of FPM’s mission and the principles that guide our work. Through assigned reading and study guide questions, interns strengthen their critical-thinking skills, develop discernment, and learn to evaluate ideas and their implications through a Biblical worldview. They then apply what they learn by researching, developing, and refining content that supports FPM’s mission and informs the public.

What You’ll Do

  • Monitor news coverage and legislative developments relevant to our mission.
  • Research topics and prepare background briefs for podcast episodes.
  • Identify potential guests, experts, interviews, and relevant source materials.
  • Develop episode outlines, research notes, and suggested questions.
  • Draft articles, explainers, summaries, and other written content.
  • Edit and proofread drafts for clarity, grammar, accuracy, and readability.
  • Verify facts, quotations, statistics, and source citations.
  • Help organize research materials and track story ideas and content deadlines.
  • Collaborate with staff to turn complex developments into accessible content for the public.
  • Complete assigned reading from several books and respond to accompanying study guide questions designed to develop critical thinking, discernment, and Biblical worldview.
  • Learn about FPM’s mission, foundational principles, and the issues affecting parental rights and private home education.
  • Apply learning through editorial work.

Responsibilities may be tailored to the intern’s strengths, interests, and learning objectives.

What You’ll Gain

  • Experience in editorial research, article writing, and content editing.
  • Hands-on exposure to podcast planning and production.
  • Skills in news monitoring, fact-checking, and source evaluation.
  • Opportunities to develop writing samples and portfolio pieces, subject to approval.
  • Experience communicating public policy issues to a broader audience.
  • The opportunity to support an established advocacy mission through research and public education.

Successful interns may also receive a letter of recommendation.
