Prior to receiving her award at Capitol Day, Senator Ochoa-Bogh graciously made the time, before heading to the airport to return to her district, to visit and speak to our attendees. This was the Senator’s second appearance at Capitol Day, but her first time as a speaker. She briefly spoke about how the government works, getting involved, and the importance of the family. Afterwards, she answered questions from our attendees. Senator Ochoa-Bogh truly embraces the responsibility of public service and enjoys educating the public about how the legislative process works because she knows many civilians don’t know. It’s for that reason, that she almost always gives a quick overview on how our government works at her speaking engagements.
After this, she shared about the committees she sits on, how many bills she and her [outstanding] staff review, as well as her busy schedule. Following that, she passionately and at times, emotionally, spoke about the importance of family and children in particular. The Senator emphasized the importance of civic engagement and teaching children to do the same, which led to her praising the families in attendance for making time out of their busy lives to participate and learn. She also recognized our families’ desire to protect their children because “there’s nothing more important than our children”. Additionally, she made two emotional and impactful statements: 1. She wouldn’t be doing this job if she had young children; 2. There’s a colleague she knows with young children who flies back home every night to read to and tuck her kids into bed each night. She ended her talk stating how much respect she has for this colleague and encouraged our families to keep fighting for what we believe in.
As if she weren’t emotional enough, this was when both Nathan Pierce and Jennifer Avila surprised Senator Ochoa Bogh with “The Legislator of the Year Award”, recognizing her for her dedication and support of private home educators in CA. Her Chief of Staff snapped a few photos of them, followed by a few more photos with families before she left. As she was walking away, the Senator said to Jennifer, “This means a lot to me, thank you.” So, why did FPM give her such an honor? Let’s explore the history of her support.
Believe it or not, the relationship all began with a district visit in 2019 – prior to her becoming a Senator – when she was a field representative. The following year, she was voted in as Senator for the [then] 23rd district. In 2021, the Avila family went to do their district visit at her office, Senator Ochoa Bogh immediately recognized Jennifer even though it had been 2 years since their last meeting. Both she and her superb staff continue to be attentive listeners of her constituents. Every year since, the Avila family has visited with her staff, keeping them apprised of what’s new in the legislative packet. However, the relationship doesn’t end there. Because the Avila family consistently shows up to events hosted by the Senator—such as water board meetings, town halls, grand openings, and more—the Senator recognizes their ongoing commitment to the district. Their involvement goes beyond seeking help; it reflects genuine engagement with the community.
Additionally, because of their consistent presence at events throughout Senator Ochoa Bogh’s district, they’ve been invited to be guests of hers at private events she has held. Legislators from neighboring districts often attend as well—creating valuable opportunities for informal introductions and networking. Interestingly, when a few constituents contacted the Senator’s office asking about homeschooling and how it works, the staff called the Avila family for guidance. They immediately knew who to ask! This is what building relationships with your legislator looks like. Above all, her gracious staff has even opened the door to be a training office for district visits! Two years ago, when the Avilas were at their annual visit, the district director graciously offered this opportunity without being asked. They look forward to these meetings—sometimes emailing or asking in person when the next one will be—eager to be refreshed on topics related to private homeschooling. Furthermore, they’ve said they would “love to be a friendly office for other homeschool parents/families to get their feet wet,” and are welcome anytime.
Additionally, the Senator has shared with others the important work we private homeschoolers do to protect our children. At in-person events, her staff has often casually inquired whether any threatening legislation is on the horizon and encourage us not to be shy about bringing it to their attention so they can help. These are some of the many reasons why Senator Ochoa Bogh was awarded “Legislator of the Year.” She and her staff value connection and seek ongoing dialogue to ensure they are aware of anything that could potentially harm the private homeschooling community. Senator Ochoa Bogh shares our values and actively praises the advocacy efforts of private homeschoolers. She and her staff remain engaged in our world and consistently show interest in legislative matters that may impact us. Let this be your motivation to start building a relationship with your own legislators. That connection could grow into something far more meaningful and rewarding than you ever imagined—and it just might make all the difference in a critical vote if a threatening bill comes to the floor.
