Summary:

Originally, this bill applied the new requirements to all schools including private schools and private home schools.  An agreement was reached between the author and the committee to accept amendments that make it so AB 727 only applies to public schools at the k-12 level and no longer applies to private schools or private homeschools.  As of Wednesday, April 9th, this bill passed the Assembly Education committee.

AB 727 is a bill in California that would require schools to print The Trevor Projectโ€™s phone number and text line on student ID cards for middle school, high school, and college students. The stated intent of this hotline is that it is meant to help students who are struggling with emotional crises, especially those who identify as LGBTQ+.

Concerns:

  1. Contradicts Godโ€™s Design
We believe the Bible teaches that God created people as male and female (Genesis 1:27), and that He has a good plan for how we are made. The Trevor Project promotes views on gender and sexuality that go against this truth, this is wrong and can confuse young children.
  2. Too Much, Too Soon
This bill promotes ideas about gender identity and sexual orientation to children through school ID cards. We believe the way these topics are addressed by The Trevor Project are wrong and not appropriate to be taught or promoted by schools.
  3. Parents Are God-Given Guides
God gave parents the responsibility to teach and raise their children (Deuteronomy 6:6โ€“7). This bill gives schools a greater role in shaping how children think about identityโ€”without parentsโ€™ knowledge or input.
  4. Danger of One-Sided Messaging
The Trevor Project presents one perspective on identity and mental health, but it doesnโ€™t leave room for children and families who want help that aligns with a biblical view. Kids in crisis need help, but that help should not lead them away from Godโ€™s truth.

Action Itemsย : Call the Governor to Veto AB 727

Pray that:

  1. the promised amendments to AB 727 are clearly reflected in the next version of the bill
  2. the author of this bill finds a better way to address the issue of children in crisis.
  3. no children would be negatively affected by the implementation of this bill.
