One of the bills we worked on this year in 2020 was SB 1153. SB 1153 contained ambiguous language regarding a requirement for students in California to attend kindergarten prior to attending first grade. SB 1153 was a direct threat to the education and development of children and would have diminished parental rights. The bill also would have forced the addition of one more year to a child’s education.

FPM’s Nathan Pierce (in consultation with Roy Hanson and with HSLDA President, Mike Smith) intervened behind the scenes and worked on amendment language with the bill author’s staff, the bill’s sponsor, and the Senate Education Committee’s staff. The amendment language was approved by the bill author’s staff and the bill’s sponsor. SB 1153 died when it did not pass the Senate Education Committee. No further action is required on this bill.
