JOINT NEWSFLASH – November 1, 2013

AB 2109 Implementation Update
Re: Personal Beliefs Exemption for Vaccine Requirements

Many homeschooling parents desire to exempt their children from some or all vaccinations that are required in California for school enrollment. As a result of AB 2109 (signed into law last year), which we fought vigorously, the legal process to do so will change January 1st, 2014. We (FPM and HSLDA) are closely monitoring this process and will provide information and analyses before the end of this month. For now, this is what you need to know.

This new change to the law does not go into effect until January 2014. There is no need for any parent to rush their child into an immediate doctor’s appointment or file any new forms just at this time. Anyone making a statement to the contrary is mistaken.

In January 2014 when the law takes effect, there will be a new immunization exemption form, which will need to be on file with the school (including private schools run by individual families as well as PSPs). This new form (CDPH 8262) was just released to the public. We are reviewing the form and related material and will be emailing and posting more to our website in the next three weeks or so.

If you are a parent desiring to exempt your child from some or all of the vaccinations required for school, please watch for our emails and website updates so you may understand this change in greater detail and stay informed as to any further developments.
