Major Victory For Parents In California!

JOINT LEGISLATIVE VICTORY NEWSFLASH – October 12, 2012
From:  Roy Hanson — Family Protection Ministries and Mike Smith — HSLDA

Bill: AB 889 – Domestic Work Employees (e.g., Babysitters)
Author: State Assembly Member Tom Ammiano

Position: Strongly Opposed

Status: Vetoed by the Governor!

A Great Victory for all Parents and Smaller Government!!

AB 889 as introduced would have, among other things, classified parents who hire babysitters age 18 or older (even on an occasional basisas an employer that must comply with all laws and regulations that govern domestic work employees and their employers.

These requirements would have included:

  • Overtime pay
  • Income tax withholding
  • Payroll wages and tax reports
  • Disability insurance
  • Unemployment insurance
  • Meals
  • Rest periods, and Scheduled sleep.

Just imagine — What would have happened to your toddlers while you and your wife are on a date night and your government-controlled babysitter is on a required rest break, sleep period, or unavailable to your children during a required meal for the babysitter?

This bill would have effectively ended most babysitting by anyone 18 years old or older in California.

We were greatly relieved and thankful to God that AB 889 was vetoed by the Governor!
