Effectively Lowering School Entry Age
JOINT LEGISLATIVE ALERT UPDATE – May 9, 2012
From: Roy Hanson — Family Protection Ministries and Mike Smith — HSLDA
Bill: AB 1772 (as amended 4/11/12) – Mandatory Kindergarten
Author: State Assemblymember Joan Buchanan
Position: Strongly OPPOSE
Thank you for your important phone calls!
Status: The Assembly Appropriations Committee decided on May 2nd to postpone the final committee vote on AB 1772 until near the end of May. We will keep you updated as further information becomes available. Please be alert, as we may need your help again in the near future.
Summary of Concern:
AB 1772 would make Kindergarten mandatory before taking the first grade, forcing one more year to a child’s education.
AB 1772, as recently amended, does indirectly what the last version of this bill did directly – that is to have “everyone” starting school at 5 years of age.
There are serious problems with this new proposed legislation that are outlined in our previous AB 1772 Action Alert, which you can read here.
Action Items:
No action is needed at this time. A big thank you to those who contacted the Assembly expressing your opposition to the bill.
